Two Letters from a businessman in Charles Town, S.C., to William Vernon, a business colleague in Newport, Rhode Island. Consisting of letter, 6 Feb. 1747, thanking Vernon "for the trouble you take in my affairs" and providing a list of current prices in the Charleston market. Letter, 10 Nov. 1747, acknowledging impact of the War of the Austrian Succession on trade in the North American colonies, explaining that business had declined since Vernon's departure, attributing the slump to "the high price of our produce, & by our Coast being so often visited by the Enemy's Privateers, (& no Vessel here to protect us)," and listing current prices.

Samuel Vernon (1683-1737) and his wife, Elizabeth Fleet, lived in Newport, Rhode Island, where he held many public offices. Their eight children included Samuel (1711-1792), Thomas (1718-1784), and William (1719-1806). Thomas, a merchant and royal postmaster, was a Loyalist during the American Revolution.
